#17 Café Ukraїna: Ukrainian Crimea

10 February 18:30 - 20:30
#17 Café Ukraїna

Dear friends of Ukraine,

After a short winter break, we are happy to welcome you again to our Café Ukraїna meet-ups.
Our first meeting will take place on February 23 at 6:30 PM at the Polish Institute Berlin – Leipzig branch.

In February- a fateful month in Ukraine’s history—we would like to talk about the events that led to the beginning of russia’s war against Ukraine: the start of the occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in February-March 2014, the realities of life under russian occupation, resistance to the occupation regime, the Crimean Tatar community, and the future of Ukrainian Crimea.

During the panel discussion, we will speak with our activist Sonja Kalmykova, writer Olena Bohatyrenko, and Elnara Nuriieva-Lietova, a Crimean Tatar author, publicist, and co-founder of the Crimean Tatar civic media outlet SEMAAT (Dschemaat), about their experiences before, during, and after the occupation of the Ukrainian peninsula in 2014.

As part of our Café, there will also be an exhibition by the Crimean Tatar artist Aider Khatipov, whose works you will be able to explore after the discussion. The exhibition is dedicated to the deportation of the Crimean Tatars on May 18, 1944 – one of the most tragic events in the history of Ukraine, Crimea, and its indigenous people.

Admission: free
