On the last Saturday of every November, Ukrainians commemorate the Holodomor – the genocide by famine committed by the Soviet occupation regime in 1932-1933 against approximately 3.5 to 7 million of their compatriots. For almost a century, Germany refused to recognize this man-made famine, which aimed at the destruction of the Ukrainian nation, as genocide. It took russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 for the Bundestag to finally recognize the Holodomor as genocide.
This recognition is important, but it is not enough. The war of annihilation that russian fascism is currently waging against the Ukrainian people is also genocidal. Like the Holodomor, it aims at the destruction of Ukrainians as a national group. Nevertheless, the German government refuses to acknowledge the genocidal nature of russia’s war of aggression, let alone fulfill its duty to intervene in order to stop this genocide.
Therefore, on 25 November, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., we will hold a rally at the Small Willy-Brandt-Platz in Leipzig to commemorate the victims of the Holodomor and to call on German policymakers to recognize the genocidal character of russia’s war against the Ukrainian nation and finally do everything in their power to ensure that Ukraine can win this war and stop the genocide against its citizens.
