Off the brakes! For consistent support of Ukraine!

While the German public is increasingly growing weary of the war, the Ukrainian people have been resisting the russian invasion of their country for more than two months. Although russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has meanwhile developed into a war of annihilation against the Ukrainian civilian population, the German federal government continues to put the brakes on. It supports Ukraine only hesitantly and insufficiently. Hardly any actions have followed the “turning point” announced by Chancellor Scholz, because Scholz appears to be playing a double game. While publicly claiming to support Ukraine and to be a loyal member of the Western alliance, he is working behind the scenes to obstruct consistent support for Ukraine.
Due to Ukraine’s resistance, the russian invasion army has already lost the battle for Kyiv. It is therefore now launching an offensive in eastern Ukraine, which is likely to be very bloody and decisive for the war. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are capable of repelling this offensive – but they need heavy weapons to do so. While numerous countries are already delivering such weapons, the German federal government continues to resist with flimsy arguments. In doing so, it not only sabotages the heroic defensive struggle that the Ukrainian people are waging to preserve their national independence and to protect themselves from subjugation under the kremlin’s terrorist dictatorship, but also acts against the interests of the majority of the German population, which supports the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine.

Despite the atrocious crimes committed by the russian army in Ukraine, Germany continues to finance russia’s war of annihilation. The German government still refuses to turn off the financial tap for russian war crimes and genocide in Ukraine by imposing an embargo on imports of russian oil and gas. It fears an economic crisis and “social tensions,” even though numerous economists have long argued that the possible consequences of an energy embargo would be far less severe than claimed by the federal government and industry, and although a majority of German citizens support such an embargo. Even if Germany were to face an economic crisis, the price would be comparatively low when measured against a russian military victory in Ukraine and its long-term geopolitical consequences.
In truth, the issue is that Scholz and the SPD are still not prepared to break with their traditional russia policy and with the kremlin’s fascist dictatorship. They fear an “escalation” of the war and believe that Ukraine cannot win militarily. Therefore, they are betting on a negotiated peace with the butcher of Bucha. But there can be no diplomatic solution with the leadership of a fascist regime. The only solution is a final and complete victory for Ukraine. Only such a victory can bring lasting peace. This is also in the interest of citizens in the democratic countries of the West. If the kremlin does not lose this war, it will continue to turn further westward and further escalate the hybrid war it has long been waging against the free and democratic world.
To demonstrate that the German federal government must finally take its foot off the brake and consistently support Ukraine through the delivery of heavy weapons and an energy embargo, we – Ukrainians in Germany and German citizens – call on all freedom-loving people to take to the streets together in Leipzig next Saturday, April 30, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
