Vigil for Peace in Freedom and Solidarity with Ukraine

For more than 11 years, Ukraine has been under attack by russia. Ukrainian cities are bombed almost daily. Weeks ago, Ukraine agreed to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire – but russia rejected it and continues to attack the Ukrainian civilian population instead.

In light of these brutal attacks, the demands of the initiative “Leipzig bleibt friedlich” are cynical: they want Leipzig to become a “neutral” place where conflict issues can supposedly be negotiated and resolved “without prejudice.” They want to stand by while innocent people die every day for the delusions of a dictator. They want to pray for peace instead of standing up for it.

We, too, are committed to the legacy of the Peaceful Revolution and its values. But when calls for peace lead to abandoning a blameless nation to an aggressor, we firmly reject this.
